Prominent Themes
Throughout the novel, Paton applies several themes in order to develop an emotional connection to the audience. Amongst them I find prominent the following: segregation, human cruelty, and Christianity.
The segregation involved in the book is used to specify the difficulty that comes with being black in the Apartheid. Along with being black, Kumalo has to travel throughout a segregated Africa in search of his son.
While on his journey, Kumalo is presented with his first taste of human cruelty when he is robbed at the bus station. He has not been raised in an untrustworthy environment, and therefore he is not prepared for the crime that actually goes on in this country.
Kumalo was one of the reasons as to why Christianity is one of the prominent themes. He was a minister reaching out to other people in his town called Johannesburg. People were having a hard time with the segregation and insanity going on in his town.
Paton explains and illustrates his themes thoroughly. They give the readers a good idea on what he is trying to get across. Many people can learn from these prominent themes throughout the novel.

I Believe...
Faith has always been a part of me. Ever since I was a little girl, it has always ket me going. It gives some kind of hope knowing everything is going to be okay. There are always situations that you have to have faith in. If you never have faith, you know it isn't going to happen. When you are certain everything is going to turn out right, that proves you are a strong person.
Sometimes we have to find that extra ambition inside of us to get through certain situations. Faith is the building block to survival. It is used no matter what circumstance you come against.
Once when I was a little girl, my mom had a drinking problem. I always knew God had a plan for my family. There was some reason he made me go through that mess.I prayed every night. I could not lose faith. Anything I have trouble with, God is the only one I can count on and that can help me with anything I ask for or need.
My mom finally got some sense knocked into her. She became sober, finally. I knew she would come around some day. My mom is the strongest woman I know. God has made me into the girl I am today because of her. Even though I went through a lot of pain as a little girl, it was all worth it at the end of the day.
Faith is always something you should have. Sometimes, things in life may get hard. You always have to stay positive and keep being faithful. There is nothing in this world that can hold you back from succeeding. As always, I believe in faith.

Juju's Peanut Butter Chewies
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of sugar
- 1 cup of Karo Light Corn Syrup
- 1 cup of creamy peanut butter
- 6 cups of corn flakes OR crispy corn cereal
Preparation:
In a heavy, metal saucepan over medium heat, mix together the peanut butter, corn syrup and sugar. Bring the mixture to a boil and remove the heat. Next, add the corn flakes. You also want to mix well into small balls. Be careful not to burn yourself on the hot mixture. Last, but surely not least, be sure to share with anyone who loves these delicious balls of joy. Do not forget to eat and enjoy!
On a late summer evening, my family and I went to Greers Ferry Lake. It was sunny, and we were wanting something chewy and delicious. My grandmother, Juju, is notorious for making her delicious Peanut Butter Chewies. In the mean time, she decides to cook a batch of them! Peanut Butter Chewies are one of our favorites in the Watson family. "Y'all go on down to the lake while I make some of these chewies," Juju suggested.
Once Juju got the chewy mixture into balls, she lets them cool. She put them a box and brought them to us in the boat. We were tubing by the time she got down there. When you go tubing, you always seem to get tired than you usually are. "Juju did you bring the chewies?" my brother asked. :I'm Superwoman to the rescue today, Price. You asked just in time!"
Once Juju passed out all of the chewies to us, we scarfed them down like a bunch of hogs. When you begin to eat them, you just cannot get enough. Once you put them in your mouth, they just begin to melt. You can't ever just get one of Juju's Peanut Butter Chewies. If you have one, you'll be coming abck for more!

A Beautiful Man
"The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of the best stories I have ever read. It is very interesting and you never know what will happen next. I did not expect anything that happened in the story. I would recommend reading this story to anybody.
This story was very unusual. The man drowned and nobody knew where he came from. Even after searching the surrounding villages, still nobody knew where he came from. Also, the man was not an actual human. He was strangely large, tall, and very handsome. That was very strange to the women who were taking care of him. They did not know where he came from and how he got that large and handsome.
If I found a strange man that had drowned, I don't know what I would do. I would freak out. I don't think I would be helpful like the women in this story. I think that it would be very difficult to help a dead man. The women in this story made sure that the man had the best care even though he was dead. I don't know if I could do that because I would be to freaked out by the fact that he drowned and he had scales.
All of these qualities of the drowned man make this story a special one. It was very surprising because I did not expect the man to have such strange qualities. This was a very good story.

A living legends final all-star game
This year, Mariano Rivera sadly played his last All-Star game. He has always been dedicated to the game, and he did everything he could to make himself better. Rivera is one of those players who never gives up on any situation that he is in. It takes everything in your power to keep striving for your goals. Rivera always worked hard for everything he wanted. It takes a lot of time and energy to make the MLB. You have to be the best of the best to make a professional team. Rivera is a pitcher. Even though you pitch, that doesn't mean that you are going to pitch every game. There are usually more than five pitchers on a team. If you are in the MLB, you must be pretty good. You can imagine all of the hard work Rivera has been dedicated to do.
Rivera got real emotional on the mound of his last game. He almost started crying when he realized that this was his last game. When you have been doing something a long time, you get attached to it real easily. If your job is the sport that you love, you do not know what to do without it. If someones job is playing professional baseball, you know they have to love the game. There are practices after practices that you have to go to. That takes a lot of time off of your hands. I know how Mariano Rivera feels because I have been in his shoes before. It is hard if you get really close to something, and then all of a sudden you have to leave.
